Laniakea: Thoughts on the Universe and Taking Action
1. a huge super cluster of many thousands of galaxies: the Milky Way is included in one of its three component parts.
2014; Hawaiian: immeasurable (or immense) heaven
Our home here on Earth is part of a giant supercluster of galaxies known as Laniakea. Our Galaxy, The Milky Way, spans 100 MILLION light years across. Our supercluster is 100x bigger than The Milky Way.
Think about that.
10,000,000,000 light years. If anybody knows how big this number is let me know, to me its A LOT.
That is just Laniakea. The universe is a COSMIC WEB of these superclusters.
And the entire universe is flowing. It is expanding and yet portions of our universe are being pulled into what’s known as The Great Attractor. The great attractor is literally shearing galaxies away from each other. Pulling everything towards the center.
It is all so incomprehensible and yet mesmerizing at the same time.
Astrophyscist Neil deGrasse Tyson has this to say about our personal relation to the universe:
"The atoms of our bodies are traceable to stars that manufactured them in their cores and exploded these enriched ingredients across our galaxy, billions of years ago. For this reason we are biologically connected to every other living thing in the world. We are chemically connected to all molecules on Earth. And we are atomically connected to all atoms in the universe. We are not figuratively but literally stardust."
Stardust! I can get on board with that, seems like a lot of potential energy contained in such a comparatively small and vulnerable species as the human race.
But dust pretty much sums it up. We are so infinitesimally small in comparison to the galaxies it’s laughable.
Inconsequential....umm not so fast.
We are not inconsequential. We are everything (Star Power). And yet we are nothing (Dust). That’s what’s crazy!
The dichotomy of the universe lies within all of us. We are always being pulled in a direction. Always searching to expand and yet stay centered. It is represented in so much...
GRAVITY / EXPANSION
PUSH / PULL
ORDER / CHAOS
MALE / FEMALE
LIGHT / DARK
We need them all. We need to be PUSHED to our limits and yet PULLED to the center, to be grounded. We need things in ORDER but too much so and we shun the CHAOS that helps us grow. We would not be the human race without men and women procreating and furthering our growth. We need the LIGHT to see, but the DARKNESS to believe.
The dichotomy lies within all of us.
The way I see it, is it’s up to me. Up to us. Our choice on how to expand and yet stay centered.
I like to imagine myself out there on another Earth, doing all the same things. Getting up, making breakfast, helping to get the kids ready, heading to work or the gym, trying to stay afloat. Worrying, competing, fighting for my place on that foreign Earth.
And yet that parallel person has no impact on me. None of his feelings get me UP or DOWN. None of his actions have any consequence on my life. That person is NOTHING to me and yet EVERYTHING.
If that person is nothing, and his actions THERE have zero impact HERE. Then what about my impact? What am I so worried about? I have one shot at this. 37 years in and a lifetime to go. Meet my destiny. Follow my legend.
I have a choice. I can PUSH the envelope on my own Being. Or I can let myself be PULLED in another direction. I can let life come at me and SURVIVE. Or I can go at life and THRIVE.
So the question is Why NOT?!
Why Not... get up early like @jockowillink?
Why Not...hunt your own food like @cameronhanes?
Why Not...run all the trails like @ameliaboone?
Why Not...have as much fun as you can along the way like @joerogan?
Why Not...be awesome every single day like @aubreymarcus?
Why Not...establish an incredible network like @timferriss?
Why Not...follow your heart like Santiago in The Alchmeist.
It has guided my direction to create the Tribute Crucible. It kept me going training for Worlds Toughest Mudder. It’s driving the inspiration for other events, other activities, other moments to share.
That other dude out there, the guy I envision getting after it on a planet far far away, we’ll meet one day. When we do I’m going to have some stories to tell him. Then I’ll thank him for the inspiration.
